Finding Freedom Through Forgiveness
June Hunt
This Past Fourth of July, we celebrated our right to vote, our
right to free speech and our right to live free from governmental tyranny
and oppression. Even so, some of us will be in bondage-not to a political
system, but to an unseen enemy, one that can be the greatest tyrant
of them all-unforgiveness. When we hold on to unforgiveness, we experience
a tremendous amount of negative consequences. We may imagine we are "paying
back" the one who hurt us, but in reality, we are the ones most injured
by an unforgiving heart.
What are the symptoms of unforgiveness? The unforgiving are lonely,
legalistic, irritable, resentful, fearful, joyless and spiritually dry.
The unforgiving have difficulty communicating, and they have inner anger,
a
lack of intimacy, a negative attitude and a blocked prayer life. To
experience freedom from the negative consequences of unforgiveness, you
must let go and forgive. But how?
Forgiveness is a choice. You must choose to forgive by replacing your
wrong beliefs with right beliefs.
Wrong Belief:
"It is natural for me to feel resentment over hurts and offenses. My
offenders ought to pay."
Result:
An attitude of pride and judgment. Setting yourself higher than God
Himself. "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own
sake, and remembers your sins no more." (Isaiah 43:25)
Right Belief:
God has forgiven me so I can choose to forgive others. I will trust
Christ Jesus, who lives in me, to reflect His heart of forgiveness through
me.
Result:
A heart of humility and forgiveness.
"For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father
will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins,
your Father will not forgive your sins." (Matthew 6:14-15)
