FROM THE MANAGER

Our lighthouse logo has been around since the early 80s.  It perfectly conveys our fundamental belief in the value of what we are doing.  Steering people safely on their journey through whatever they may encounter by means of God's Word as seen in Jesus Christ.   Our beacon is fueled by the insights of God's Word.  Our foundation is the same Lord we project.  Our
focus is faithfulness, always sending a clear message and not always knowing who the Lord is touching in His providence.  Our desire is as the light grows stronger and reaches further, people will know the truth and live by it.

As you can imagine, I've become a collector of lighthouses.   I have pictures, figurines, books, and pins.  Some I have purchased, some have been given as gifts on special occasions and most of the pictures are cut outs.  I have one treasure painted by a very good friend.  As I look around
my office and home I am reminded of the station's (and my) task.  Lean on the Lord so we can stay steady and strong.

I have another collection that consists of two items.  They are lapel pins.  I'm not looking to add to this collection since those I have were the personal property of loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord.  The first pin belonged to my Dad and is the emblem of the company he
worked for most of his life.  I've always liked the red, white and blue emblem of the Union Pacific Railroad.  On Dad's pin there are three small diamonds signifying thirty years of service.  The second pin belonged to my sister-in-law who before moving to Florida served Durham County General Hospital for more than twenty years.  Her gems look to be emeralds. I am inspired when I think of the consistency and perseverance each of these pins represent. I know how difficult it must have been for Beverly to daily work in developing student nurses, dealing with them on a personal and professional level.  I'm sure she was an example that many of her graduates still use to steer them in their careers.

My Dad was a laborer.  It was difficult work yet most days when he came home he still had time to remodel our house or build a beautiful runabout from scratch or convert our garage into a shop where he started a second job.  I remember many days he would come home looking like a coal miner, clean up and head for his shop.  He took good care of his family.

I guess you can see I love my family.  Even those who have gone on still have a place here on earth, in our hearts.   As much as family means to me you should also see from my collections I admire consistency and perseverance.  Where would we all be if we couldn't find a steadfast,
faithful environment?  The world shows us as it attempts to deal with turmoil and find peace that it has lost the ability to create or even recognize stable safe surroundings.  As we help shape and steer our world, we need to lean more on our Living Lord.  He is the one who can help us take on His strength, develop a desire to reach and rescue His precious children (the world), and live a rewarding consistent life that will be fulfilling to us and faithful to His purpose.  And one day when we hear Him say, "well done thou good and faithful servant", we won't be surprised but full of joy that our work was accomplished and our faithfulness was because of His faithfulness
We at WCIF pray that in this new year we will live up to all of God's  expectations for us.  We want to be consistent and persistent.  We want to help you stay steady, be encouraged and become a stronger follower in December 2003 than you are in January.  Is that possible and  worthwhile?  It would certainly please the Lord so you decide.  In order to stay steady one element of our foundation is the ability to pay our monthly expenses and provide an emergency reserve.  As much as we can help you and your friends, we need your help.  This is a two way street.  In your resolutions for the new year will you please consider a steady contribution  to WCIF?  Even before sharathon comes in March we could benefit from your decision.  You have heard appeals from almost every broadcast ministry we air and hopefully you can respond but remember, this is your local source for your favorite ministry and needs to remain healthy as well.  Could our logo be your logo, telling others what is safe and important?  May this year be your best year of persistent and consistent Christian living and may WCIF be one of your main sources of growth and inspiration.  And may your local church be your service outlet to the world in need.

WAYNE PEDERSON JOINS MISSION  AMERICA!

New Dimensions broadcaster Wayne Pederson has joined Mission America as COO/President effective Jan. 1, 2003.  We'll miss Wayne's presence on the WCIF airways.  Mission America Coalition is a network of 400 Christian Leaders uniting for evangelism and spiritual renewal in our nation and the church. The Coalition represents 80+ denominations (with 210,000 churches) and over 350 ministries and networks such as Campus Crusade for Christ, Navigators, Concerts of Prayer International, and Promise Keepers.  Mission America calls for active participation in the Great Commandment (To love the Lord with all your heart , and your neighbor as yourself)  and the Great Commission (to preach the Gospel to everyone).  Wayne says of his opportunity, "Serving with Mission America Coalition is clearly a call from the Lord.  It fits my call to ministry to 'make the Good News clear to good church people who didn't have personal relationship with Jesus Christ.'  (Barna tells us that's 50% of churchgoers today.)  It also fits with my passion for evangelism and spiritual renewal.  And it uses God-given spiritual gifts in strategic planning, team building, communication of vision, and networking.  In addition, Mission America Coalition is not a top-down organization, but a grass roots movement,  which fits my management style as player/coach.  Our experiences have helped sharpen our mission.  There is no more effective way to effect permanent change in our culture than through the preaching of the Gospel.  And there's no more powerful way to change the church than through genuine spiritual renewal."     Wayne produced New Dimension for over 30 years.  He and his wife Norma have two daughters and six grandchildren.

Giving

Giving at the end of the year allows the Christian giver to express gratitude and love for the financial and spiritual blessings experienced during the year. The spiritual value of year-end giving is often overlooked, and yet is one of the most important factors in Christian stewardship.  Giving thanks to God for all He has done for us should motivate us to give all that we can. Proverbs 3:9(a)(NAS) says to "Honor the Lord from your wealth".

Here are some ways that you as a Christian may honor the Lord as you give your wealth.

Gifts of Cash
Charitable gifts are often made by cash or check. - If you itemize your deductions, gifts of cash may be deducted up to 50% of adjusted gross income.  - If you want to take a deduction on April 15 for this year's taxes, the gift must be completed by December 31.

Deductions may be taken in the year of the gift and may be spread over five more years.  Since tax rates are decreasing over the next several years, making a gift this year gives the best deduction.

Stock
Appreciated Stock -Give the Stock to the church and let the church sell it.  You by-pass capital gains taxes and you get a charitable deduction for the full value of the stock.  The stock must be owned by you for a year and a day.  Depreciated Stock- You sell the stock and give the proceeds to the church.  You may take a loss and take a charitable deduction for a cash gift of the proceeds.  NOTE:  If you own $10,000 in appreciated securities and have $10,000 in cash, you should give the $10,000 in appreciated stock to the church, then use the $10,000 cash to replace the stock given.  This gives you a stepped-up basis.

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE
You Must Have owned property for one year and a day. - Your deduction is based on the fair market value of the real property.  You must obtain a qualified appraisal.  Your tax advantages are the same as for appreciated and depreciated stock.

Gifts of Life Insurance
You may assign your annual dividends to the church/WCIF.  You may use the
annual dividends to purchase a new policy for the church and make the church the irrevocable owner and beneficiary. - Give a paid-up policy that you already own.  You can deduct an amount equal to the approximate cash value up to 50% of adjusted gross income.  - Name the church as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a policy you already own.

Retirement Assets
If you are over 59 ½ and have tax-deferred retirement accounts, you  may wish to make withdrawals sufficient  to fund your charitable gift.  -   You will report the income on your tax return and take a corresponding deduction for your gift.

Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)
A Charitable Remainder Trust provides substantial tax savings and provides an annual income to the donor.  If funded with appreciated assets, you may by-pass capital gains taxes and may increase your income when the asset is sold and reinvested to produce an income for the beneficiaries. Upon the death of all
beneficiaries, the remaining assets are distributed to the church.

Gift Annuity
A Gift Annuity allows a person to make a gift of cash or securities and retain the right to receive income from the gift.   - The payout rate is based upon the beneficiary's age(s).  You receive a tax deduction and a portion of the income is returned as tax-free principal.  If the annuity is funded with appreciated assets, capital gains may be deferred. At the death of the beneficiaries, the church receives the remaining principal.

NOTE:  Tax laws are subject to change.
