How to Get Where You Want to Go

    June Hunt

Setting your goals to reach the heights in all areas of your life

As you begin to write 1999 on letters, on checks, your date book - does that give you pause? Have you set goals for this year - this year that is right on the cusp of the big 2000?

"Well, I made no New Year's resolutions, if that's what you mean. Good intentions are just not that spiritual."

Lighthearted banter that sometimes characterizes greetings at the turn of the year really doesn't reflect how we think about life in our more reflective moments. For the believer, each day is very important.

When you consider 365 days that stretch out before us in 1999 - surely that much time is a commodity we need to think about with some purpose. The Apostle Paul did. So did James. And Peter. I'm not sure how thoroughly they scheduled their days, but there were terminal points wherever the church existed, terminal points marked off by the Lord's day.

Beyond that, however, Paul had short-range goals, and he had some long-range goals too. He recognized that not only what he did was important, but also why and how he did it were vital also.

Ultimately we should pursue goals which glorify God in all things. Consider establishing goals in different areas of your life: spiritual, family, financial, physical, vocational, and social.

As you identify important areas that need change or maturity, set measurable goals that are realistic and reachable. But first, begin with prayer, asking God to help you know His will for you in 1999.

Getting God's perspective is imperative. His plans for you are always attainable - provided you have His power.

Be time specific. Goals need to have a beginning and an end. Changes can be ongoing; nevertheless, establish intermediate goals - mileposts that will call you to account to help you measure your progress (or the lack of it). A word of caution: if this is a comparatively new experience for you, begin with a modest list. You don't want to get bogged down with too many details at the start.

Consider each category separately. You can integrate them after you are underway and are able to clarify some areas of overlap or some facet that has escaped your thinking.

SPIRITUAL: This is ongoing. But what regular daily plan do you want to put in place to assure you will interact with the Word of God regularly? Will you do this independently from your family or others?

Suggestion: Review the pattern of your life every three months. Growth will be evident if you have prioritized times in God's Word and in prayer.

What about a regular prayer time? A specific place to pray? In praying, begin with adoration - be in awe at who God is - and tell Him. Confess any sin the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Then give thanks. To be consistent in praying for needs, develop a prayer list of people, ministries - whatever God lays on your heart. Caution: as your list grows, develop different lists for specific days of the week.

Can you think of some marker you might put in place to discover if you are growing in your knowledge of God? This may be a review every three months when you identify a change in attitude toward some thing or some person. As you meditate on this, search for measurement of growth in which you ask God to give you guidance. You will be pleasantly surprised to discover you have made some strides toward your goal which you had not recognized in the intervening weeks.

FAMILY: What are your goals for each member of your family? Your mate? Each child? Extended family? Pray Colossians 1:9-12 for each member each day. Ask God for opportunities to give counsel, and divine wisdom to counsel well. Learn to be transparent with your family. Admit shortcomings. Encourage. Encourage. Encourage. You will be surprised how quickly you get a reading on your growth in these relationships. It will be measurable.

FINANCIAL: This is measurable, too. Remember that we are still talking about goals. A clear understanding of biblical stewardship is essential if we are to set godly goals and find biblical instruction for making good decisions. As stewards, we are responsible to God since He owns everything. We are simply His managers. Once you get a handle on this issue (which is a problem area for many people), you will discover God has solutions - even for these problems. This is measurable.

PHYSICAL: Do you have a plan? You can adopt someone else's plan. Plans are everywhere. Be specific. Do not overstate your goals. Make it modest enough to see some progress, then build on that. This, too, is measurable.

VOCATIONAL: Statistically, people in the workplace can now expect to change "jobs" five to seven times over their working careers. How can you expect to set long-range goals if that statement is even modestly accurate? This is a real test of how we learn to "walk by faith, not by sight." Be as flexible as God wants you to be. Goal setting in this area will require that we take into account the stewardship we practice with time, abilities, money, relationships, truth, and faith. Measurable? Yes, and it must be monitored regularly.

SOCIAL: Be sure to set goals here - for yourself and your family - if you are outgoing. You need to choose carefully where to invest your time. Practicing hospitality is still a Scriptural command and obedience will meet needs which you didn't know were there. This too is a matter of stewardship. Is it measurable? Satisfaction and growth will be strong indicators, but you will need to take time out to make the judgment.

If you view your life with a spiritual yardstick, glorifying God in all things, you will find yourself "serving one another" (1 Corinthians 10:31, Romans 14:19); being a "good steward" (Ephesians 5:22-6:9; Galatians 6:9-10); reaching out to the lost (1 Corinthians 10:31-33; 2 Peter 3:9). You will bear spiritual fruit and good works (John 15:8; 1 Corinthians 6:12; Ephesians 2:10; Colossians 1:10).

How you do what you do as you move toward godly goals is no small matter. When your heart and motives are right, your life will be characterized by LOVE (Romans 14:13-19; 1 Corinthians 13:1-3), HUMILITY (James 4:6; Philippians 2:5-8), GRATITUDE (Colossians 3:17), and COURAGE (John 16:33; Matthew 10:26-28).

All of the basics for setting goals are found in the Bible. Realize, these are guidelines authorized by God. Knowing them is important. Putting them into practice is more important.

Goal setting - and planning. They will enable you to be like an arrow, not splintered or undirected, aimed toward the right target, propelled with the right heart, becoming what is right in God's sight.

    Letters

MELBOURNE - Dear friends in Christ, thank you so much for the lovely music and the so very helpful messages.

MELBOURNE BEACH - After listening to your radio station for a number of years, I find it difficult to listen to any other. The absence of noisy commercials is so restful, plus I'm always uplifted by your programs.

PALM BAY - God has blessed me through His word and the music from your radio station. It brings me comfort and assurance relying on God's precious promises day by day as I struggle to help my husband who has Alzheimers. I pray many are likewise being helped. Thank you for being there

ROCKLEDGE - Thank you for many hours of listening pleasure or company as the case may be. My listening time was usually A.M. with Steve Brown, Daily Bread and Action Four. Through this last year with four surgeries and now beginning 6 months of chemotherapy. I've spent many restless nights, Nightsounds with Bill Pearce and Music Through the Night with Mike Kellogg have been a real blessing to me. Thank you for carrying them!. . . God bless all who have a part in WCIF.

MELBOURNE - Enclosed please find my year end contribution. Thank you I intend to continue my monthly contribution in the coming year.

MELBOURNE - Thank you for the marvelous renewal of God's Holy Spirit through word and music every day. I enjoy your monthly mail too. I appreciate the warmth shown my Pastor Schoenrock (meaning beautiful rock in German) when he was Pastor of the Week. I'm sure he was elated to be so welcomed in the community. In two months we see revival in our church, he is a true man of God. He and his family are a vital part of our congregation already. You all seem to have the gift of keeping up with the current needs in an uplifting manner and never deviate from the true Gospel. God bless you all real good.

MELBOURNE -May God's blessings be upon you all at this holiday season. Just a little check which should have been mailed before Thanksgiving. Thanks again for all the beautiful services we listen to on the radio each day.

VERO BEACH - Just a note to say, God Bless each of you, for all you do. I start my day listening to Chuck Swindoll, at 2 PM I listen to Dr. Stanley. They are great preachers , and teachers. I become aware of new messages from God when I listen. I'm 82 years old and learn more about my Savior as I listen. I can't wait to go home and see Him at last. Have a holy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

PALM BAY - I just want to take this time to say how much WCIF is being a blessing to my soul. My dial is tuned to 106.3 exclusively. My prayers are that God will enable this wonderful ministry to be on the air for a very long time. God bless you all and continue to do the great job you are doing for the Lord's work.

PALM BAY - Thank you for keeping me going all year. WCIF is a real blessing and you all are very special. I wish you God's blessings for a very happy Christmas and continued success in the new year.

COCOA - As 1998 comes to a close and we look forward to a new year, I pause to reflect on what has been a blessing to me this year. The word of God, good Christian music, Godly advice from Christian men and woman, Christian financial advice, comfort and cheer at just the right time, just when I needed it most, these are the many blesssings that are mine through WCIF. I want to wish all of you a merry Christmas and I look forward to 1999, partners with you for the cause of Jesus Christ.

PALM BAY - Please pray for my son-in-law. He is a very good man but he does not believe in God. Please pray that God may show him the way out of his
    darkness.
