HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
Understanding the Times
In 1 Chronicles 12, there is an interesting description of David's army, using several illustrative words and phrases. One is a "time" phrase. We are told that David's army was made up of men "who understood the times" (I Chronicles 12:32). The writer then says this phrase means they "knew what Israel should do". In other words, a part of our knowing what to do is understanding the times in which we live. The church must understand the culture to which she speaks and to which she ministers.
We need to understand that we live in what has been called the "post-Christian culture." Today less than one-third of the people in the U.S. say they believe the Bible is the Word of God. In a broader sense, there is a prevailing view that there is no such thing as absolute truth. So when we say, "The Bible says . . .," fewer than one in three people are ready to listen. Therefore, it is increasingly important that our lives reflect and validate the words we speak.
Further, we must understand that the problems the world is facing (and trying to resolve by political, economic and educational means) are spiritual problems that will be solved only by spiritual solutions. We need to understand that while we can pass laws, we cannot change hearts. We can guarantee everyone an income, but we cannot guarantee them meaning in life. We can guarantee everyone an education, but we cannot make him or her use that knowledge in the right way. Someone has reminded us that education without Christ produces only clever devils.
Appointed Times
On several occasions throughout Scripture, we encounter a simple "time" phrase with a profound theological implication. It is a phrase "appointed time". The phrase itself appears five times in Numbers 9, but the idea appears in any number of places, including Genesis 21:2, where it is rendered "...at the very time God had promised him." In Exodus 9:5 we are told that "the LORD set a time," and in Mark 13:33 we are told to be ready since, "...You do not know when that time will come." In each of these instances and many others, the point is the same: God has a plan that is being worked out in the course of history. He has appointed the time at which certain things will take place.
God is in control.
History and, therefore, our lives are not just a series of unrelated,
chance occurrences. God's plan is behind it --the plan of the One who loves
us and wants the best for us. In addition, it is the plan of the One who
is sovereign and who is powerful enough to work His plan. What tremendous
hope and confidence that ought to give us. Our life and times are in the
hands of the Lord Jesus Christ who is too wise to make a mistake, too kind
to do anything cruel and too powerful for anything or anyone to thwart
Him in
carrying out His plans for us. Even when we do not know the details
and cannot see how it all fits together, we can know that life is not just
left to chance. The details of our lives happen on His schedule and according
to His plan.

5 Steps To Winning The Spiritual War
Satan's primary goal is to discourage and defeat you. Peter tells us he prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you (I Peter 5:8-10).
