    FROM THE MANAGER
    Lee Martinez
Lee Martinez The events of last month have shaken people around the world. The vulnerability of mankind and the wickedness in some men's minds have made us all rethink some very basic assumptions. As a nation we were living as though we could make it on our own without spiritual ties or protection. There were even groups who were trying to legally divorce us from our spiritual heritage.

It was gratifying to see that one of the first things our nation did in the aftermath was to seek God's comforting, protecting hand. Prayer meetings and vigils were held from homes to schools to the senate. Television cameras forgot to fade away from the prayer groups they had been avoiding in the past. Even the ACLU knew better than to raise any objections as the nation attempted to deal with grief and uncertainty in the only way that had any certainty in it. What a way to have our eyes cleared of the scales that have kept us from focusing on what is real and important. What an opportunity to help friends and neighbors find and reach out to the God that loves them and certainly can do something about our situation.

This year, as we approach the Thanksgiving season we could have a large list of overlooked blessings for which we can praise our God. On my list I plan to have more people than possessions. Have you noticed, people are actually making eye contact where earlier they preferred to be deliberate strangers? They are talking to the people stuck in the same line. We suddenly realize that we,re in this together; there is no escaping it. It's almost a Christmas atmosphere in terms of the goodwill we have to share.

It was so good to see how people got behind the efforts to rescue and comfort those who needed help. Our heroes became those who had the expertise to take our place and risk their lives in the recovery efforts. After all recovery is what it should be all about. We recover from the tragedies of life with God's help. God shows through us the way to recover our standing with Him through Jesus Christ His Son.

We are standing at a crossroads. One way leads us back to the same old thing maybe even into a steeper deeper rut; the other way leads us and our friends to new heights of contact and blessings from the Lord. Revival could be just around the corner as we find the joy of a better relationship with our Lord.

The opportunities are short lived as people adapt to their situations. We begin to see a need to get on and go forward. Our resolve has a way of becoming blurred. Already the "no god" forces have seen an opportunity to restate their unbelievable proposals and once again they are receiving an audience.

Our determination to make a new and better world by joining together and fighting wicked men could backfire on us. If we forget that it is God who teaches us and ultimately protects us we continue to lose. As Chuck Colson wrote," We must face a sobering fact; we will not prevail against terrorism no matter how good our armed forces are. We will prevail only if God in His mercy decides to forgive us, heal our land, and give America another chance." I hope God has used WCIF to help you heal and focus. There have been numerous messengers who have provided comfort and courage through God's Word in the past month. The healing is still going on but so is the challenge to stay close and change those things God has asked you to change. Tell your neighbors about the God who heals and loves them. Tune them in to WCIF and let some of the very best teachers tell them what you may not have words to express. We are here for our community. Help them find this safe place. That's what many are saying. Adjustments have been made across the nation. We at WCIF have had to make some very unexpected adjustments. One of those is in our finances. Giving has dropped dramatically to local ministries including WCIF. Our programmers have warned of the same thing happening with them.

WCIF has always tried to be good stewards of what God provides through your generosity. Therefore when there is a drop in giving we feel it almost immediately. We don,t have a great margin of reserve. We need your help!

Would you please use the enclosed envelope to keep us going? I know God is using WCIF in your lives, we hear it all the time. These past two months have really taken a toll. We have never had to make these appeals before and it's a bit uncomfortable but it is necessary. Thanks for helping out in these last two months of 2001!

OUR ONE ASSURANCE - Dr. Charles Stanley

The prophet Isaiah had a wonderful plan for dealing with the difficulties of life. He writes: "In repentance and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and trust is your strength" (Isaiah 30 : 15).

Repentance of sin is a key to restoring broken fellowship with the Lord. But after we repent, which means to turn away from sin, we are to rest in the goodness of God's forgiveness and grace. Rest is vital not only for the restoration times of life but also for times of spiritual growth and achievement. We rest in the fact that God is God and there is no one like Him. He is infinite in wisdom and power.

When problems arise and we cannot see clearly, the one thing that quickly restores a sense of peace and rest is the realization that God is in control. No matter how out of control life may appear, this truth provides a tremendous sense of strength and peace.

The psalmist writes: "The Lord has established His throne in the heavens; and His sovereignty rules over all" (Psalm 103:19). The news we read in the newspapers or see on television may seem to indicate the opposite - that God is not in control but man is. However, in every set of circumstances we must remember that God has a plan in mind for our lives. (Jeremiah 29) He knows what it will take to accomplish His purpose. Sometimes the greatest disappointment or tragedy can be the catalyst God uses for blessing and renewed hope, especially if the trial reveals a lack of faith on our part.

How should we handle difficulties when they come our way? Certainly we are not to respond frantically or anxiously. A personal, loving God who watches over your life is in control of all things. During the outbreak of a sudden storm on the sea of Gallilee, the disciples cried out for fear that they would lose their lives. But Jesus commanded the waves to be still and the winds to stop. His sovereignty rules and He loves you.

This is your greatest assurance: The God of the universe is a personal loving God who is aware of you and promises to bring peace and order to your life.

Isaiah writes: "The everlasting God, the Lord, Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired"He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power" (Isaiah 40:28-29). Remember whatever you are facing, God is in it with you. He will not abandon you but will bring hope and restor- ation as you trust Him.
