You hear it every day, the crime rate continues to climb and it doesn't seem to matter where you live. The most alarming part is that children are being charged with what were once known as adult crimes - crimes which were too violent or too wicked to be thought up by an innocent child. |
Anyone with concern for the future of their own family begins to look for solutions. Parents are seeking to protect their children from those they are around in school. They examine what is viewed on television and screen what the children watch. We need help because the problem takes more than preventive measures and includes more than just the children.
If we go with the government solution we allow it more money and let them hire an army of police. We put up with any abuses this might cause and write it off as the cost of being "free". Wouldn't you know it, God has a better solution, even for those who still need to call on His name for the first time. It requires something of everyone and the more you give the more you get.
Social science has confirmed it. Stable neighborhoods produce stable people. Stable people are more likely to ward off the advances of crime into their neighborhoods. The children do better in school and are faithful to family values. They are more resistant to the persuasions that lead to even petty offenses. While this may not be the answer to all the problems it is a lasting solution with a built-in foundation in godly principles.
Stable means more than a neighborhood watch program although that's a start. It means more than "you watch my back and I'll watch yours". It has to do with seeing the people next door and down the street as friends. It's knowing each others' names and interests and trying hard to like one another. It's coming to a point where you could correct or protect the children on your block without social or legal complications. In short, it's regarding the neighborhood as you might your own home. It's where you live so make it something worthwhile.
When asked, Jesus said our neighbor was anyone in our life who needs help. My question to you is who are your neighbors? What are their names? What are they really like? If you began to understand them do you think they might want to understand you and possibly try to understand what your faith is all about? God intended being neighborly for more than protection, He intended us to learn to love each other and share common interests. That may be a far cry from those of us who have been Christians for a long time and seem to have only church friends now.
What I am saying is our neighboring skills probably need to be sharpened. Our natural inclination is toward insulation. We get home and close off the outside world. If someone needs help it would be a surprise to us. A friend of mine had finished some work for a widow. As he prepared to leave she asked if he knew anything about plumbing. There was a leak she needed fixed. Now there's an area that can get you into a mess. He decided to at least see if he could confirm she needed a plumber. He found it was her garden hose which needed a washer between connections. He told the lady and she quickly came up with the washer. I wonder how long a little thing like that had worried her and why she wasn't close enough to a neighbor to get this done, saving her an expensive house call. Most of the time neighboring can be easy and has built-in rewards.
We need to start somewhere in taking an interest in making our neighborhoods friendly. One great idea is to combine spiritual exercise with the physical. It's called prayer-walking. Taking time to walk in the evening, praying for each household as you go. It involves saturating your neighborhood with prayer and watching how God puts opportunities in your path. Everyone wins when neighbors start trusting each other and relying on their friendship. It takes effort and concern on your part. But I would rather put the effort here than in worrying how our community will turn out. So tell me who is your neighbor?

MELBOURNE - Here is my donation for September-November. I'm sorry I have fallen behind. I enjoy your radio station. The music brings me back to God's love; whenever I am down or straying, the music sets me back on the right path and restores my attitude. I also love listening to Dr. Dobson's Focus on the Family; many times he has helped me with inspiring messages and direction/guidance for a better Christian life. Thanks so much for your station. I pray God will continue to bless this station and pray too that others will come to know God and Jesus because of your being here.
PALM BAY - Due to vacation planning we overlooked our September pledge. Kindly accept our apologies with this two month's pledges - we must keep WCIF on the air.

I just wanted to let you know what a blessing your station has been to me. . . .Your program format, especially Charles Stanley's messages, and the songs, I have rededicated my life to doing God's will - not mine. I won't bore you with the details, but God uses your broadcast to reach people. Thank you again and God Bless.
