Ever been misunderstood? It happens to Christians every day. It happens because people listen to the uninformed comments of many reporters and commentators who have daily deadlines to meet. |
It could be these trusted journalists have picked up on how easy it
is to get the attention of their readers or viewers by bashing a mostly
gentle group of people. These people whose nature is to avoid retaliating
when possible are a people who attempt to serve a perfect Master in spite
of their imperfect human nature. They can be misunderstood in their actions
and in their desire to live above the human condition. Since this group
is slow to retaliate, some commentators
feel misrepresenting them will have few consequences. No lawsuits or
letters come because of their action.
So what can we do to be better understood? How can we fight this trend? Could we take over the mass media? Buy up the newspapers and broadcast stations! How can we let our friends and neighbors know how much we love them and why we are different? It's very difficult when people are taught to mistrust those who belong to Christ.
This subject reminds me of a time (long ago, far away) when a local pastor was accused of compromising the Word and selling out to the world. It alarmed me at first but as I heard him preach and saw what he stood for I soon began to mistrust the source of the information. The pastor had merely stuck to what he was called to do and his Godly work went on.
I have a question. If someone on the outside wanted to check our walk, how would they do so? They don't know much of our language or our liturgy. They mostly have to go on outward appearances, our work. If this is valid then I have an answer. They need to see we care about people so they can understand why Jesus came. There are ways this can be accomplished and the one I would like you to focus on at this time has a means of saying to hurting people, "you,re not alone and we can do something about your situation in Jesus, name". There is a group that allows Christians to take care of the needs of their neighbors.
They have addressed the problems associated with the type of work they do and have increased their responsibilities to the point that their name is well known and so is the work they accomplish in Jesus name. They have been well received and uncompromising in their interaction with the public. Their reputation is such that many businesses and groups channel their goodwill efforts through them. Churches and denominations work through them to fill the needs of families.
Habitat for Humanity has been established to work in every community. Locally they are responsible for 59 families having a decent place to live. They are committed to making decent housing available to those who are willing to work and become responsible homeowners but need a boost. One of their mottos,"a hand up not a hand out" reminds us that there is a way to be good stewards of what we give when there is an honest need.
When I spoke with the local leaders and learned of their commitment and their methods of raising funds and establishing hope, I was impressed by the idea that this would be a way we as Christians could work in a spirit of unity. If we worked together we would also be making an impact on those who tend to misunderstand our theology. Many other groups have pooled their efforts to build. With the number of churches in our area, why shouldn't we get together and build at least one home? Even small churches would be able to add to the overall effort and see things done beyond what their small family might be able to accomplish alone.
With so much potential to do good and bring the Christian community together, WCIF, First Baptist Church of Melbourne and Habitat for Humanity are hoping you will get involved in an on-air effort to help provide housing for at least one family. We have scheduled a one-day on-air event designed to allow the Christian community to fund and build a Habitat home. Each house costs $42,000! How is that for good stewardship in today's market? I really feel we will exceed that goal but there is already a family waiting for this home to be built. We will tell you more about this on Tuesday October 17, the day we have picked to get together. During that day you will hear from those who have been helped and many pastors who have already chosen to get their people involved. You will also hear the Habitat story and I'm sure will be impressed by the wisdom God has given the leadership to avoid pitfalls and make a large project work.
As you join us and help reach the goal remember people will be watching as they always do to see if we will put work to our words. People need to understand that we serve our Savior even as we serve those in need. How can that be misunderstood?

I hope you had the opportunity to be with us during our open house. It was so good to see everyone and hear their encouraging words. We want to extend the invitation to come see what the Lord has done if for some reason you were not able to come to the open house. We would be glad to have you call and set up a time to tour the studios. Normally we just need a few hours notice. If you can take fifteen or twenty minutes we would be glad to have you come take a personal tour. Call 725-9243 or send us an email. |

SHARPES - I am writing to thank you for the after church, programming on WCIF. As I was driving from your church I was truly blessed by the soft and worshipful instrumental music playing. It helped me to meditate on the morning and to prepare my heart to preach at the jail. I hope you will continue to play music such as this during the after church hours on Sunday.
