    FROM THE MANAGER
    Lee Martinez
Lee Martinez Are you ready for some football!? With those words a new season begins. Until this week, we hadn't heard that question since the Super Bowl.

I got excited. I like football and I'm looking forward to it. To me it makes for an interesting evening. But I know that even as I get excited about the season there are those who heard that and groaned. Wives mostly, but others too know they now have competition for a family member's attention. I'm sure they have all heard that amusing phrase, "don't talk to me until the commercial", and know the truth of it.

I plan to be more careful about my viewing this year. There is a tendency to keep watching just because there's a game. So, if the teams don't interest me or they are completely mis-matched I plan to do something else with my time. There is more than football on Monday night.

For me this renewed awareness came as I read Chuck Colson's book," How Now Shall We Live", and as he wrote of how much time Americans devote to entertainment, I saw some of the very things he was saying creeping into my own habits. In the latter part of the book, one of the problems Chuck identified was that when you condition your mind to accept an overload of entertainment you begin to expect everything to be entertaining. Your ability to reason and discern, and your desire to work on things that require disciplined mental effort begins to wane. Soon the only things that can get through to you must be served up in an entertainment format. And with your discernment compromised you become a target for thoughts and ideas you would normally reject in an instant.

Anyone who speaks with a little authority and seems to have a half-thought-out idea can get your attention because for one thing they appear to have done your thinking for you.

This has a relationship to the programming of WCIF. There are times when someone will ask us to be more "entertaining". Plan more music or be more youth oriented (inferring music is their only need). Be more like the other stations in the area. I would be the first to say we always have room for improvement and I'm glad to listen to those who understand what God has called us to and can help us reach that goal better. I would also say we understand our role to present the Gospel in an entertaining manner but we also have to keep in mind the instructional, encouraging and inspirational aspects of what God has given us. There are times when each of us needs to be strengthened and our mood may not be responsive to something amusing. "Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart" (Proverbs 25:20). This our role, to be there on your behalf when God wants to lift up those heavy hands. God teaches us to never leave our wounded behind.

The difficult part is balancing our programming so our listeners hear the message that God loves them in the sunshine and in the shadows. I am amazed to hear from those who call and say how God has ministered to them with just what they needed at just the right time. Soon after someone with other needs says the same thing, God was there for them in the music and the messages.

Our logo is a lighthouse and it was aptly picked. If you live by a lighthouse you can always get your bearings. It stands out in a storm and instills confidence. When there is danger look for the light. Even on a clear night the consistent reach of the light says all is well. The focus of our light is Jesus. He fills all our needs.

When you listen, leave room for others. We would like every minute to be focused on your needs and wants but sometimes, for just a moment, God may be reaching into someone else's life to bring them to where you are in your relationship with the Lord - isn't it exciting to be His?
